My first Blog...

Well this is Mike and this is my first foray into the world of blogging. Beth made me… okay asked me… okay suggested I…. okay fine, I asked her if I could blog an entry.

Life has been interesting since the boys came to say the least. We’ve learned some important lessons that I’d like to report. Some can empathize I’m sure! Here is our top ten:

1)    I can now sleep anywhere. I thought I could sleep anywhere before. I couldn’t. NOW, I can sleep anywhere and anytime. If a baby falls asleep on me while I’m making dinner, I put down the stuff I’m working on, and lay down on the floor for a nap.

2)    I’m dead to my parents. Not literally of course, but if I walk into the house with Aiden and Christopher, my mother has learned to turn hugging me in greeting into a clever way to steal a baby out of my arms.

3)    I can do 200 deep knee bends in 30 minutes. Deep knee bends help the babies stop crying, the human body is remarkably adaptable. I don’t think I could do 5 deep knee bends in 30 minutes before the boys.

4)    The hour 3AM still exists. However, now instead of being used for college pranks or the ride home after a concert, it’s for feeding babies and sleeping sitting up (see rule 1).

5)    Two 3 month olds who can’t walk, crawl, or roll can somehow create a mess it takes two adults two hours to clean up every night.

6)    People don’t lose hearing because of loud music; they lose it because they had infants that screamed into their ears at remarkably high octaves at some point in their lives.

7)    Packing light now means two car seats, extra blankets, diapers, wipes, bottles, toys, change of clothes for them, change of clothes for me, stroller, and burp clothes.

8)    Milk brain isn’t just for moms. I realized this when I found myself three thousand miles across the country at a business meeting with two left shoes.

9)    Diapers are wonderful, horrible, and everything in between. Thank the Lord we don’t live in a time that requires cloth diapers. On the flip side, how does so much come out of such a little person?!!

10) Infants can aim. Cold air signifies freedom from the diaper, and freedom from the diaper means a chance to get mom or dad. Who would have known that before the human brain develops the ability to talk, walk, or even smile, it develops the ability to aim.

I’m sure many can add to this list and we’d love to hear your suggestions in the comment section.

This has been a great stretch for us lately as the boys learn to smile and coo. I think in many ways parenting for a father takes on a deeper more enjoyable flavor once your kids can respond to you. The things I will do for a smile from Chris or Aiden shock even me. Friends and family have always been important to me, but they have taken on a new meaning over the last four months as everyone has rallied around us in a truly remarkable way. We’ve felt loved and supported to a remarkable degree.

Thank you to everyone who’s visited and helped us, and hopefully the blog keeps you feeling like your involved in our day-to-day lives. Join me in convincing my wife she should write an editorial for a local newspaper! In closing Chris would like to say something to his brother – “haha Aiden, I got a quote on the blog first!”

I think that the two of you could do a great job as editorialists! Nice first attempt Mike! As I have often told you both, you are wonderful parents to our beautiful grandsons... lucky babies, lucky us. Love to you all.
