We are under attack. Just before vacation we battled with itsy bitsy sugar ants. I set out a few traps and within a day, they were gone. Mission accomplished. This week is it the invasion of the BIG black ants. Yuck. With no shortage of crumbs on the floor at any given moment, we feed them well. Very well. They are making themselves quite comfortable as they’ve realized just how cozy it is at our house. Traps are only put out after the kids have gone to bed for obvious reasons. Any day time safe/all natural ideas? Something that wouldn’t require emergency care if/when ingested? I’m afraid squishing them one by one just isn’t cutting it anymore.
As we are down to the final weeks of summer, we’ve been trying to check out and revisit from fun local venues. Cheap is the name of the game as we never know how long we will last and it is amazing just how many free trails, parks and activities there are. I’m certain we could stay busy for months if time and moods allowed. So we’ve been busy, just how we like it. We were thrilled to have plans to meet up with friends Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Tuesday we visited McClean Game Farm in Granby for the first time. I can’t believe we haven’t been to this gem before. From the road it just looks like a path through the woods but the clean, well kept trails, bodies of water and friendly visitors make it so much more. We had a blast and I found it a very easy place to go with all three kids in tow so we’re adding it to the top of our list. Wednesday we were excited to meet the Sylvestre’s at the Spray Park in South Hadley. It had been a year since we had visited and the boys had a blast.
And Thursday… well, Thursday was not our typical day. Aiden and Chris actually asked for a stay at home, do nothing day and that’s exactly what was slotted for Thursday. We played in the yard, nibbled from the garden, weeded here and there and just had a lazy nothing day. They loved playing with the neighbors and having no need to look at the clock. Come dinner time, we headed in. Aiden and Chris are antsy eaters. They have never had the attention and interest to sit well and to be honest, it’s a daily battle to get them to sit through a meal. While Jake loves his food, he too is now getting pickier and has taken a liking to throwing his food when he’s finished, thus helping to feed the ants. On Thursday, Jake was the first to finish. In an effort to get him out of his highchair before he started throwing his food, I lifted him out and cleaned up his setting. In the process, Aiden and Chris sat blowing bubbles in their cups of milk and giggling in their typical silly fashion. Without my knowledge, it wasn’t long before they started doing “magic tricks” with the beads from a broken necklace that lay on the table {in an effort to keep Jacob from eating them.} Well, one thing led to another and before we knew it, Aiden had a bead lodged in his nose. Far up his nose. So far that I couldn’t see it when peering in with a flashlight. He was a bit panicked as was Chris who had the brilliant idea in the first place. Worried myself, I called my Mom then called the pediatricians office and off we went. I can not tell you how thankful I am to have a husband who can be flexible with his work schedule most days. Mike met us in the office to bring Chris and Jacob back home. Aiden and I waited and waited and waited to be seen. When the office closed, they snuck us in and gave us little hope when they noted just how far the bead was up his nose. Sneaking in a quick prayer for patience, minimal pain and lots of cooperation from the big guy and no need for an ER visit, I was open to any and all suggestions. Blocking one side and blowing hard failed. An attempt at grabbing the bead with some large plyers failed. Blocking one side of his nose while I gave him mouth to mouth in an attempt to force the bead out failed. Sneak in more blowing and the Dr. scouring the office for “creative tools.” And finally, with the aid of a second Dr, and another attempt at grabbing the bead, we were in the clear and on our way home…. Two hours later but oh so thankful for Aiden’s health, bravery and no ER bill. Lesson learned… the hard way. And the worst part, just the day before I was telling the kids how silly Auntie Laura was to stick something up her nose when she was little and how scary it was for Dziadzu who had to bring her to the ER. Did we really have to re-live it for ourselves? Perhaps Aiden just wanted to have a good story to tell to his own kiddos some day. We’ll go with that!
And yesterday…. We had a blast. We started the morning at Sunrise Park beach with our friends the Schillings. The boys adore their girls and I so admire my friend Suzy and the beautiful family she has raised. While the weather was cooler, it was just perfect for a day in the sun. We stayed a few hours and headed home to meet Grammie and Dziadzu for the big boys much anticipated sleep over. They had BIG plans for their time in Belchertown and I’m certain they kept Grammie and Dziadzu on their feet through the night. Jacob and I had a quiet afternoon. It’s funny how the pace slows so significantly when you’re only concerned with the needs of one little guy. Mike is in a golf tournament this weekend so it was just the two of us. We headed out for an evening stroll, stopping to check out the work trucks in town because after all, how many opportunities do you have when you have nothing to rush home for. Jake’s fun and oh so entertaining. We played, we read, we snuggled and he fought bedtime hardcore. I can’t blame him… I’m kinda fun to be around We’re off to pick some raspberries this morning and then headed to Belchertown for Auntie Laura & Uncle Eric’s belated birthday celebrations. Much fun on our plates this weekend!
and I have to share with you, the quote of the week. Yesterday while at McLean Game Farm, we came across an employee working on a building on the trail. As we passed by, I said hello and he replied “Howdy.” Aiden {in complete innocence} speaking loud enough to be heard says “Hey Mom, do you think that guy speaks cowboy?” Call me silly but it made me giggle.
