News worthy

It’s funny the things that we don’t think to teach our kids but are learned along the way.  Aiden jumped in the car early this week and explained to me that we have 4 “good” fingers and one “bad” finger.  Not completely sure what he was referring to, I asked him how he learned that.  He was happy show me the good fingers and what they are good for and the one bad finger {but unsure why it was bad….}. He further explained that a classmate got into trouble for using the “bad” finger when someone said something mean to him.  This was a moment of relief to know he wasn’t the one using the “bad” finger.  Chris then needed to know how one can swear without using words.  Not an easy concept to explain when you’re trying not to teach your kids new words and what the middle finger truly stands for.  Thank you AFM for lessons of all kinds!  I should also admit that we are overly sensitive to “bad” words in our house and consider “stupid” and “hate” in the swear category.  It is amazing how different words can sound out of the mouths of babes.

We have officially concluded the boys first week with two full days and they are loving it!  Grouchy and tired but enjoying the privileges that go along with staying for 7 hours with the kindergarteners. They were oh so excited to participate in gym class and a library excursion last week.  I was thrilled to hear their joy and of course I loved hearing their play by play of the entire day.

In other exciting news, Aiden and Chris won a Christmas coloring contest.  There was a random publishing company that hosted a Christmas dog coloring contest.  The boys adore dogs and have been very into coloring.  Apparently it was the perfect combo as they both received a random package over school vacation containing a little stuffed dog and a copy of the dog’s Christmas story.  How cute is that?  Aiden won first prize {this kid takes his work seriously and spent hours on this picture!} and Chris won second prize {still did a great job but wasn’t quite into all of the fine details.  I wished I had taken a picture of their final masterpieces…. shame on me.  The boys were also lucky enough to be featured on the cover and first page of our local paper for participating in our library’s Polar Express Christmas program a few weeks back.  They were so excited to see themselves “famous.”  Sometimes it’s the little things… Autographed copies are available :)

Jacob is such a busy boy!  At just shy of 9 months, he is pulling himself to stand, crawling like a champ, walking while holding onto 2 fingers and crawling on top of anything he can find.  He’s a mover and a shaker.  He finds great joy in loom bands, small lego’s and misc. crumbs – all of which quickly make their way to his little mouth if given the opportunity.  That’s right… we’re in the danger zone!  He loves to watch his older brothers and wants to play with anything and everything he sees them with.  Sleep has been difficult the past few nights.  No signs of sickness so I am guessing it may be teething.  Perhaps I should say, I am hoping it may be teething because lets be serious, any excuse is something that gives a tired Momma a slight bit of hope!  We will be headed into the pediatrician's at the end of the month for this check up but I’ve got a good feeling about his weigh in.  After all, this boy is serious about his food! {And by good feeling, let me clarify that he’s still a tiny lil guy but growing none the less!}

Mike and I have made a conscious efforts to keep our life’s simple for the next few weeks.  With the boys adjusting to new school schedules and Mike and I adjusting to two crabby, over tired, high need boys we have been laying low.  We’ve started swim lessons again on Monday nights.  The boys were thrilled to discover that it was the same group of 5 boys that returned for a second session.  We are thrilled they are enjoying the experience as much as they are.  Mike and I were both able to sneak out for a night with friends this week.  It’s always nice to feel adult and human and dress up in jeans, tossing aside my regular daily attire of sweats to catch up with some of our favorite people. We also had a visit from Grammie and Dziadzu yesterday and of course the boys haven’t stopped talking about it and are counting down until they see them again. We were also excited to head to Westfield again this morning with our friends the Lockes for another fun filled, energy burning morning with the kiddos.  I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a rainy Saturday!

Never a dull moment….

Finally, to share a cute story….

In the winter I get antsy.  I am always itching for a new project and always wanting to redecorate, rearrange, re-do something. {Mike just loooooovess it…..!} Each night I spend with Jake in his bedroom, I look at the letters hanging on the wall that spell his name.  They are simple wooden letters that I painted white and Mike helped me attach them to a strip of wood to hang.  They have bothered me since I first hung them up.  I never loved the way they looked and each night {or early morning I should say} I reworked the look in my mind.  So… finally, I decided to take the plunge and make a change.  As I took the old letters off the wall, Aiden and Chris came in, asking what I was doing.  Without much thought I replied “changing Jacob’s name.”  I am sure you can imagine the direction the conversation headed as they both furrowed their brows, wanting to know why I was changing his name and what his new name would be.  Oh fun with words, choice phrases, misunderstandings and four year olds!
