Like all good weekends, Labor Day was no exception, coming and going all too quickly.
The weather was too good to pass up on Friday night so we had a fun family hike and picnic dinner at Hublein Tower in Simsbury. We had never been before and it seemed to be a perfect fit for everyone (except maybe Mike who was assisting Jake and in need of assistance himself starting up the slope…. shh don’t tell him I shared!) Tours of the tower were just wrapping up as we arrived at the top but it’s a great reason to go for a repeat visit.
Saturday morning we finished re-leveling and laying the bricks for our back patio. We would love to build a deck off the kitchen but for now, we’re working with what we’ve got and what our budget allows and we’re thrilled with the improvements. It’s amazing the difference it can make to remove the weeds and “junk” between the pavers and realign them. After a sleepless night, we put Jake down for an early nap to head to Mystic for the afternoon. Our friends and neighbors have a boat there and invited us along. Aiden and Chris were in their glory. We visited, kayaked, swam in the pool and rode around in their smaller boat exploring the area. It was a late night but fun for all.
After church on Sunday morning, we met our friends the Tetreault’s for a hike and picnic around the new church property. It’s always so great to catch up and enjoy their company. And with yet again near perfect weather, we headed out to work on the boys fort in the woods. The “Tigers Den” is coming along nicely and from the moment the kids wake up, they’re asking to get to work. It’s made almost entirely out of materials found in the woods and repurposed from various projects. They’re proud as can be and are recruiting the help of all of the kids in the neighborhood. Secretly I think Mike and I are enjoying the project and sportsmanship just as much as they are!
Monday. What a day… heat, heat and more heat! It was Farm Fest in Suffield and it seems to be typical that with this event comes hot, steamy weather. Yesterday was no exception. We were excited to meet up with our friends the Fishers despite being pulled by the littles in varying directions. With face painting, animal demonstrations, tractors and a huge dirt pile, it was heaven on earth for the kiddos. The adults on the other hand sweat through it and appreciated air conditioned cars far more than normal :)
With a heat wave in full force, Jake and I snuck out early and were excited to have his first day of library story time. We ran a few errands and headed home for his nap. He seems to finally be understanding that “Aiden brothers” are at school and return when he wakes up from nap. I snuck out at bedtime to meet up with a few lovely lady friends and was thrilled to have the chance to catch up and enjoy a relaxing night.
Off to soccer tonight with LOTS of water in tow.
In other news, Jake has finally started to show interest in potty training. Hip hip hooray! Maybe I should clarify, the treats Jakes bribed with during successful potty attempts are working and he managed to empty his bladder drop. by drop. by drop. God give me patience!
