Wow, Monday marked the boys 6th week birthday. Honestly, where is time going? For as simple as our days are, they are certainly flying by! My maternity leave is already more than 1/3 over! While Monday was the boys 6th week birthday, Sunday was my actual due date if I had gone full term to 40 weeks.... how weird is that? It is like we had the boys on borrowed time for 6 extra weeks!
Today was a big day for the boys. We had a bright and early morning and started getting ready at 5 am. We had to do an early feed because today was the boys circumcision and they weren't supposed to eat more than 2 hours before the procedure. Unlike the last few weeks, today was our first day of a solid structured, timed morning. We started the feed at 6 am, followed by some infant Tylenol and numbing cream to help prepare them for what lie ahead. The numbing cream came with funny instructions as we were told to apply it 2 hours before the procedure to the entire penis area and to make sure it was localized to that area only, we were told to use Glad Press and Seal and sick their penis to their belly. Yes, you heard it right.... I had to laugh out loud when we heard that one!
Anyways, everything went well this morning. We got to Baystate for 7:30 am. Even the receptionist wasn't there that early which kills me. The first procedure was scheduled for 8 am but they ask you to arrive 30 minutes prior. We arrived at 7:30 as they had asked and waited for 30 minutes before anyone else showed up :) Oh well, live and learn. I was of course nervous and waiting didn't make it any easier but as people mentioned, I think the whole day was harder on Mike and I then it was on the boys. Chris went first and was gone for about a half hour. Mike, Aiden and I waited in the waiting room for about a half hour before they brought Chris back out as a new man. Poor guy was all red in the face and although they don't have tears yet, you could tell from the look on his face that he had been crying and was upset. Aiden went next and I was surprised when we weren't given a room to wait in. We had been told in our pre-op visit that we would have a recovery room where we could feed the boys and wait until they urinated. Instead we sat in the public waiting room with Chris who was getting fussy and uncomfortable and about 5 other kids... Needless to say, I wasn't too happy to have to sit in a room full of people with everyone looking at us, wondering why we were still there when our baby was "done", not realizing that we actually had two babies. Anyways, I am so glad to have today behind us.
Following the circumcisions, we headed to our pediatricians for the boys 6 week check up. The boys did great despite their discomfort. They were troopers. Both boys are 20 inches long now and are in the 50th percentile! In 15 days, Aiden gained 25 ounces and Christopher gained 24 ounces! Aiden is now at 7 pounds, 10 oz and Chris is at 7 pounds, 1 oz. Way to go boys! Chris is in the 25th percentile for weight and Aiden is in the 50th, both of which were fine.
As if this poking and prodding wasn't enough, Aiden then had to go to a lab to have blood work taken for his Billi levels. We already received the results this afternoon. His levels are slightly elevated but not of any level of concern, phew! Finally, after 3 Dr.'s visits the boys were done and we were headed home for cuddle time. Once we were home, the boys settled in, fed well and loved to be snuggled. What a long day for them but they were champs! Tomorrow morning we are off to yet another appointment for a follow up eye exam. It's a good thing for health insurance!
Oh and I guess I should share my milk brain story of the day. Being as it was an early morning, I got up and made coffee my first priority. Coffee is now a treat since it had been 9 months cold turkey for me. I filled my 16 oz mug to the top and placed it on the island side of our kitchen counter. I then went to the fridge and without even thinking of it, picked up the coffee mug next to the fridge & microwave and took a big swig... Boy was I surprised to find that I was drinking from the stale, cold water used to warm up the babies bottles.. oh well... live and learn and get new germs I guess :)
